What is SSH ?

Super Science High School (SSH)

In Japan there are 204 SSH's and in Yamanashi there are 7

In 2012, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT) nominated Koma High School as a Super Science High School(SSH) for 5 years. In the SSH program at Koma High School we are using advanced methods to teach science and math. At the same time we are creating ties between our high school and universities throughout Yamanashi. Our school also is promoting many activities so the students become interested in international affairs and are able to be more internationalized. We have also been developing new teaching methods and materials which enables the students to harbor their creativity and originality.

Koma High School’s Research Theme

The main theme is “Traditional and Modern encounters for the future of Minami Alps ~ the research and development to create a strategy to raise a community oriented scientist” There are also 3 subcategories of this theme. 1. The study of Mt. Kushigata’s environment and ecology and hands on experiences using top technological resources 2. The research of the surrounding nature and how to effectively incorporate it in our local industry 3. Nurturing the student’s English skills and the ability of communication so they can survive in an international society

SSH events

This year students have visited research facilities in Tsukuba, Tsukuba University’s Shimoda Marine Experiment Center, created ties between our high school and Yamanashi University, and had many guests present a special lecture. In each event students feel satisfied because they are able to accomplish many things and think these events are a good opportunity for them. After these events, students thought of their own research theme based on these experiences and also carried out task-oriented research.

SSH events help students realize what they want to pursue in the future

Students want to pursue a future where they can make use of their experiences and their knowledge of science they received from SSH events. Koma High School hopes to bring about promising students who will be able to support and be useful to the local community. Year after year we want to improve our SSH program by combining students individual activities and eventually incorporate science into the curriculum more.
